ENSense Nameplate Reader
Accelerate your onsite data collection with our automated device Nameplate Data Reader and extractor.
The Nameplate Reader scans images of device nameplates and intelligently extracts and processes the device attributes. This is the perfect tool for Arc Flash studies, data collection, and data validation, and works on any type of device that has a nameplate; pumps, motors, valves, transformers, switches...anything.
Engineered for critical utility infrastructure, our automated Nameplate Reader transforms raw field data into accurate, actionable asset information. This is the definitive solution for efficient data collection and validation.
Capture a photo and keep moving; our engine handles the heavy lifting in the cloud, bridging the field-to-office gap in real time.
- Faster field collection: Digitize device attributes in seconds with advanced AI and OCR technology.
- Seamless integration: Works directly with your existing GIS, mobile tools, and asset management systems, or can operate as a standalone application.
- Fewer go-backs: Eliminate manual entry errors and ensure data integrity on the first visit.

Real project results
Or a recent project, we measured an average time of 5 minutes spent in front of each device using traditional data collection methods. Those times were reduced to 30 seconds per device or less, with the Nameplate Reader. The cost and time savings only collecting device data across the 450+ devices on that facility was in the tens of thousands of dollars.
On a similar project a team working an Arc Flash study on a DOD installation using the Nameplate Reader combined with the ENSense EDM tools saw a 10x increase in productivity of field crews using these tools. Work was scoped for surveys of 15 substations over 3 weeks using standard methodologies. After only two weeks using the Nameplate Reader and ENSense EDM, the teams had inspected 150 stations.
Additionally, data collection and processing accuracy increased from around 75% using traditional data capture methods to over 98% with the Nameplate Reader.
The scalability of the tools allowed the client to deploy the same configuration, adjusted slightly for a new project, at 80% reduction of cost.
How it works
The ENSense Nameplate Reader utilizes a proprietary machine-learning pipeline optimized specifically for the high-glare and weathered surfaces typical of outdoor substation equipment. Our OCR engine doesn't just read characters; it understands the semantic context of utility data, cross-referencing values with known equipment profiles to ensure high-fidelity digitization and data accuracy. Once captured, data undergoes a complex validation protocol before being synchronized with your master asset records.
The Nameplate Reader can be used real-time from the field or on existing images stored elsewhere, even processing large volumes of images as a batch.
Flexible deployment options
- The Nameplate Reader is available in several different flexible plans; monthly, per-project, annual, or custom. We can integrate our service directly with your GIS and mobile tools.
- Don’t have a GIS? No problem, we can help with that; use ours, or we can build one for you, on premises or in the cloud.
- Don’t want to change your existing GIS schema? The Nameplate Reader can also be configured with its own set of tables or geodatabase to store data for your needs, with a sync utility to whatever system you need to move updates into.
- Our experts meet with your team, gather requirements, and run our configuration tools to set up the correct data mapping from the devices you want to inspect to the correct tables and values in your database.
ENSense EDM
Engineering Data Management
Turn field-to-office-to-field workflows into a single, real-time loop. Empower your engineers and field crews to work together from a single live source of truth—eliminating file-chasing and guesswork with the ENSense EDM toolset. Updates from the field are immediately available to all other field crews, and everyone in the office, real-time.
Using our ENSense EDM Engineering Data Management workflows and tools we can configure your existing GIS (or help you build one) to optimize data collection in the field, sync it back to the office and give your engineers, planners, and analysts access to real-time asset information.
- Locate and navigate: Easily find and navigate to facilities in the field with the mobile map.
- Fewer go-backs: Eliminate redundant site visits through instant data validation.
- Better data quality: Capture critical asset details straight through your GIS in real-time.
- Faster collection: Optimize mobile tools so crews work at high velocity with higher accuracy.
- Real-time field-to-office loop: Office teams get cleaner data and better insights as it happens.
Perfect for Arc Flash study data collection, field data collection, and asset management projects, the ENSense EDM ensures data models get stronger and every site visit delivers more value. We help you tune your workflow so data moves faster, from the ground up.
The ENSense EDM is a simple GIS-based system that will allow your field crews to collect better, more accurate data while onsite and sync it back to the office real-time while they work in the field. Everyone is looking at the same maps and the same data. The Engineers in the office can assign work to field crews, monitor their progress, and view data and images coming in from the field as they’re being collected to be sure what they need is being collected, where they need it.
DEEP DIVE
We start with setting up the GIS for the project. The ENSense EDM toolset is built on the Esri Enterprise GIS platform, and we use either your or your client's existing GIS or take an extract of the work area's GIS data to build the maps needed for the project. If no existing data is available, the EDM allows field crews to add data as they work through the area, so they're building the data as they work. Field crews work with mobile devices equipped with cameras, typically clients use iPads or Android tablets, but the mobile tools can be just as easily installed and used on any smartphone too. Teams in the office or anywhere with a desktop or laptop PC have access to the same maps, and the same data, made available through web maps and dashboards that allow areas to be selected in the map, infrastructure equipment data viewed and edited, and equipment within that selection area can be assigned to any specific person or crew. As field crews work through their assigned areas, they capture images of equipment, record attributes, and even inspection data, right into the GIS. These updates sync back to the folks in the office, and out to every other worker with a device in the field allowing everyone to see what work is assigned, what work is completed, and what information is coming in from the field.
Better data leads to better and more confident decisions.
